Elsa and Celeste – Legos

A few months ago I got some legos duplo for my girls. That was a purchase well worth it. The girls have played with the legos for many hours.

Most of the time the girls play well with each other while sharing the legos, but sometimes they get a little aggravated with one another.

“I want the big lego for my dinosaur!” Elsa yells.

“Noooooooo, I want for house!!!!” Celeste screams as she knocks down the lego legs of Elsa’s dinosaur.

“AHHHHHHH! Celeste, why did you do that?” Elsa cries as tears begin to fill her eyes.

“Girls, time to calm down before I take the legos away.”

“But Daddy!!!! Celeste broke my dinosaur!”

Celeste retaliates by saying, “Elsa take my lego.”

Tears begin streaming down both of their faces.

“We have to share the legos. Elsa, you already have a dinosaur. Let Celeste build her house.”

“Noooooo… that is not fair! I need two dinosaurs!”

“Elsa, you have to share, or I will have to take the legos away.”

“OKAY!” Elsa cries as she walks away pouting!

“You don’t love your children!” Elsa screams as she slams the door to her bedroom.

Celeste happily talks to herself as she continues to build her house, “I need this block and this one and ROAR a dinosaur.” BAM BAM BAM the blocks go flying everywhere. “Dinosaur destroyed the house” Celeste proudly says as she stomps on the little bricks.

Elsa and Celeste – Sharing

“Celeste is drinking all the milkshake! She is going to drink it all up!!!!!” Elsa screams as we finish up our meal.

“Elsa, you had the milkshake for 3 minutes, Celeste just got it and she has not even put her mouth on the straw yet.”

We had just taken drive through the mountains meandering down a road which follows a river. Lots of outdoor enthusiasts were out fly fishing, tubing, hiking, and biking.

After a few hours of driving, we all began to get a little hungry. The girls began to wiggle and squirm in their car seats.

“We are hungry… You shouldn’t let your little children starve” Elsa and Celeste cry. (Elsa taking the lead and Celeste backing her up).

“Girls, you just ate a banana, goldfish, and peanut butter crackers…… You cannot be that hungry!”

“But we are! We are going to starve……”

Just as the girls were getting more antsy, we went around a curve and their was a little town with a restaurant waiting for us. The little town consisted of about 5 buildings all connected together. The Harley Davidson bikers seemed to have discovered this town long before anyone else. Harley’s were scattered all over the parking lot with a lot of men and women in their black leather jackets standing around talking.

Once in the restaurant, we ordered our burgers and got the girls a chocolate milkshake to prevent them from starving before our burgers arrived. Elsa made sure she was the first to get a sip/gulp of the milkshake. After a few minutes she finally deemed Celeste worthy of a sip. Before Celeste could even put the straw in her mouth, Elsa cried, “She is going to drink it all. It is my turn!”

Elsa and Celeste – Dentist

Elsa and Celeste had a dentist appointment today. This is the first time the girls have had their mouth x-rayed. They were both a little nervous this morning.

We took the girls to a pediatric dentist. In the waiting room there was a retro arcade game with Pac-Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong, and other vintage games. They also had a play area which was set up like a camp ground with a tent, play camp fire, canoe shaped couch, and a fisher price grill. The girls quickly got over their nervousness and felt like they were in heaven!

The dental hygienists were very gentle with the girls. Celeste had fallen and hurt her lip and tooth a few weeks ago. The fall had cut her lip and required stitches… Today the dental hygienist took extra care not to hurt the sore lip. Luckily the tooth looks like it was just bruised… We are still praying it will heal fully.

Celeste took to the dental chair like a rockstar to the stage. The hygienist gave her rockstar-like sunglasses which she wore with pride… even if they were upside down…

Elsa recently lost two baby teeth. She was very pound of her teeth missing and made sure to show the hygienist and the doctor. When it came time for her examination, Elsa sat quietly and listened to every word the doctor said.

I am glad the girls first dentist appointment was a positive experience for them. I am sure they will look forward to the next time we visit.

Celeste and Babar & Hand Lettering

BABAR

Babar is a strange story especially for kids. The story has the death of Babar’s mother by poachers and the death of the King of Elephants by eating a bad mushroom. Babar also happens to marry his cousin… Celeste. As strange as the book is, it has been a favorite around our house.

When Elsa was born, we received the Babar book and a stuffed animal Babar. Elsa loved the story, but she never liked the suited elephant with spats.

A few years later, Celeste was born. She has adored Babar from the get go. She sleeps with Babar every night. Throughout the day the girls play and play with their toys and Babar sometimes “accidentally” falls behind dressers or bookcases and gets lost. When bedtime rolls around, I get to spend a lot of time trying to locate Babar since Celeste has to have her stuffed animal to sleep with.

HAND LETTERING

This is my first attempt at hand lettering and creating illustrations with adobe illustrator.  The image goes along with my story today about my daughter and her love of Babar.

Lately I have been trying to get better at Adobe Illustrator. I am hoping to pick up some work as a freelance illustrator/designer. I have also been practicing my skills with hand lettering and vectorizing it with adobe illustrator. I first found out about hand lettering a few years ago by watching a video on Mary Kate McDevitt. I may start to include some of my hand lettering work on this site as I continue to practice it.

BOOK UPDATE

As far as upcoming books, I am currently working on a new book. The book will have a Christian theme, but will not be part of my Creation Series. This will be a stand alone book. I will continue my Creation Series beginning of 2018. I plan to have my new book available soon after Thanksgiving 2017.

Elsa and Celeste – 4th of July

With the the 4th of July celebration this week, my girls (wife included) and I created one of our favorite summertime recipes…. Chocolate Ice Cream!

We have an antique hand churn Dolly Madison ice cream maker from the 60’s or 70’s. It was handed down to us from my wife’s parents. It is a great heirloom for the girls since their mother and aunts used this ice cream maker when they were Celeste and Elsa’s age.

For the ice cream base, I used David Lebovitz’s basic vanilla ice cream and then modified it.

1 cup whole milk
a pinch of salt
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups heavy cream
6 large egg yolks
6 tablespoons dutch processed cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

(1) Fill a large bowl with ice and water and place a second bowl in the ice and put the 2 cups of cream into the second bowl.
(2) Stir together the egg yolks and put them into a sauce pan with the milk, salt, sugar, and cocoa. Cook this mixture on medium heat while continuously stirring with a wooden spoon. When the mixture has thickened and a thin layer sticks to the back of the spoon, remove the mixture from the heat and add vanilla extract.
(3) Pour the cooked mixture through a strainer into the chilled cream. The strainer will keep any large pieces of egg from getting through. (The egg that is captured makes a great treat while waiting for the ice cream to freeze)
(4) Now place the chocolaty cream mixture into a refrigerator over night.
(5) Once the mixture is chilled place it into your ice cream maker and use the proper instructions to operate your particular ice cream maker model.
(6) Enjoy

While I spun the ice cream in the maker, Elsa and Celeste tried to reach into the open top and grab the salted ice as it spun around. I thought one lick of the salty substance would make the girls change their mind about stealing the ice…. I was wrong, they just wanted more and more.

Once the ice cream was softly frozen, I poured it out of the ice cream maker and mixed in a cup of Ghirardelli chocolate chips (This was the first time we did this receipt with chocolate chips). Then I placed it into the freezer to harden a little more.

After spending 30 minutes churning the ice cream, it was hard for the girls to wait for it to finish freezing. Luckily they did survive and we all enjoyed eating it on the 4th of July!

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July Celebration!

Elsa and Celeste – Stroller

After loading the girls in the stroller, we head to the park for some fun in the sun!

“Daddy! I hate the stroller… I want to walk… Please let me walk.” Elsa begins to plea about a block into our walk.

“I want to walk too,” Celeste chimes in.

“Just sit still for a little longer. Tomorrow we will walk to the library No stroller.” I promise the girls. Continue reading

Elsa and Celeste – GO AWAY

“Daddy! Mommy! Look at all the people down stairs!” Elsa yells as she comes running into the living room.

Looking out the window, I see a large group of patrons at the bike shop downstairs. Everyone is laughing and talking while holding a drink and a small plate of food.

We live in a multi-use building. Half of our building is for residential use and half of the building is for commercial purposes. From early Spring until Fall, the bike shop is one of the most popular destinations for the lively biking community here in Colorado.

“What are they doing down there?” Elsa ask with a confused look on her face.

Life Out Of Life

“Daddy! Mommy! Wake up! The sun is up, let’s go see everyone,” Elsa exclaims as she jumps with excitement.

I rub my eyes as I search for my glasses on the nearby table. The sunshine is bright and streaming through the semi-transparent currents. The rest of the house is completely silent.

Not yet opening her eyes, Celeste rolls over and plops her thumb into her mouth as she makes a low moan.

“Daddy! It is time to wake up!,” Elsa yells again as she jumps on the bed.

Yesterday we had just made a 17 hour trip from Colorado to Texas to visit my sister-in-law. Along with us as company, my sister-in-law also had her parents visiting (Celeste and Elsa’s Grandparents). The grandparents slept in the room next to us. Even though the girls were able to nap on the trip, my wife and I did not. Waking up early was not on our agenda this morning.

I listen again to see if anyone else was awake yet… Not a peep.

“Elsa, everyone is still asleep. lay down on your pallet with Celeste and let’s sleep a little longer”, I insist.

“Daddy, I cannot go back to sleep. I am not tired anymore!,” Elsa says as she stomps her foot.

“You can be awake, but you have to stay in the room with us until everyone in the house is up.”

“Daddy! I have to leave this room. I don’t want to be in here anymore.”

“Elsa, come lay down beside me,” my wife says as she pats the covers beside her.

“I’m not tired! I want to see mimi and grandpa”

“Elsa, just relax and lay down for a little longer.”

“Oh Daddy! You are taking life out of life!”
